Ukraine carried out a major attack against Russian regions in the early hours of Friday (24), which hit the city of Saint Petersburg, where warehouses of the Russian e-commerce network Wildberries were attacked by Ukrainian drones for the fourth time in less than a week. In the Kirov region, a missile killed six people.
The attacks targeted warehouses in Shushary, within the perimeter of the city of Saint Petersburg, and in the industrial zone of Utkina Zavod, in the Leningrad region (administrative division surrounding Saint Petersburg).
Large fires at the Wildberries company’s logistics complexes caused a cloud of smoke that could be seen several kilometers away from different parts of the city. Helicopters were mobilized to the scene to fight the fire.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said the attack left civilians injured and hit residential areas. According to the latest information, three people were injured.
According to Leningrad Governor Alexander Drozdenko, “three people were injured in moderate condition and are being treated by paramedics in hospital.” He added reported air defense forces shot down 59 drones over the region.
It was the fourth time Wildberries warehouses were attacked by Ukrainian drones in less than a week. A network depot was hit for the first time last Saturday (18) in Kotovsk, in the Tambov region, and in Elektrostal, in the Moscow region. Seven people died in Kotovsk and one in Elektrostal. Dozens of people were injured.
Pulkovo International Airport, in Saint Petersburg, had its operations restricted during the night due to the attacks. Early in the morning, the air terminal resumed operations. At 6 a.m. Moscow time, approximately 50 flights were delayed by more than two hours.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed attacks on Wildberries warehouses, saying the warehouses are “legitimate military targets” responsible for distributing drone components and equipment to the Russian army.
The Kremlin, in turn, denies that the Russian company’s deposits are used for military purposes. According to Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the losses suffered by Wildberries and its sellers represent a “difficult situation”.
“Regarding the company you mentioned, the situation is indeed difficult due to the losses suffered by both the company itself and small businesses,” he told reporters.
According to the spokesperson, Ukraine carries out these attacks with the aim of targeting civilian areas. “Kiev continues to attack peaceful targets, and this is the terrorist essence of the Kiev regime,” added Peskov.
Attack in Kirov region leaves six dead
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the Ukrainian attack this morning was carried out in several regions of the country and, in total, the air defense system shot down 571 drones.
At the same time, a missile hit a factory in Russia’s Kirov region, leaving six people dead and 26 injured. According to the region’s governor, Alexander Sokolov, the injured are receiving the necessary assistance and emergency teams are working at the scene.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces attacked “one of the most important military enterprises” in Kirov. According to Ukraine, the factory produces anti-aircraft guided missiles.
