United States President Donald Trump asked last Sunday (13) that Ukraine stop attacking Russian oil refineries. Trump spoke to journalists at a golf club in Ireland, and took the opportunity to call out Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “You have to do one thing, stop destroying diesel in Russia,” said the Republican.
The American president’s demand has to do with the economic situation of the country he governs. Last week, a gallon of diesel in the United States surpassed US$6, according to the American Automobile Association, which represents a historic record.
For Trump, however, the reason for such a rise is the conflict in Eastern Europe, and not the war launched by US and Israeli forces against Iran, which began in February. “This is not the work of the Middle East,” said the US president.
In any case, Ukraine has intensified attacks on Russian refining parks, putting Moscow’s processing capacity at risk. Russian President Vladimir Putin even extended the ban on exporting diesel until the end of September.
This Monday (14), Trump went further and declared that the two sides had already concluded an energy truce. “Ukraine has agreed not to strike Russian energy targets. Russia has agreed to do the same,” Trump said on social media. Zelensky, in turn, put the statement into perspective, saying that there is a proposal on the topic, but that no agreement has been signed.
What remains to be seen is whether negotiations between Russia and Ukraine can move forward or not. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov mentioned that a trilateral round between the two countries and the US in October is something that could happen. Meanwhile, Russian presidential advisor Yuri Ushakov made a point of highlighting that Russia’s demands “remain unchanged”.
