Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared this Tuesday (15) that he considers the energy ceasefire proposed by US President Donald Trump “a good idea”. Despite truce efforts, there were attacks on energy infrastructure on both sides of the conflict last night.
At the same time, he noted that the proposed truce in attacks on energy facilities will not solve the global problems of fuel shortages. According to him, for this to happen, the sanctions policy must be suspended.
“We saw President Trump’s announcement about an energy ceasefire. Overall, we certainly think it’s a great idea, a good initiative. We are in contact with the Americans. We always support peaceful solutions,” Peskov said.
According to the spokesperson, the first condition to guarantee global energy stability is navigation safety for oil tankers, and the second is the lifting of sanctions. Peskov stressed that only after the sanctions are lifted “the world will be saturated with oil products” and prices will fall.
“Ensuring the safe operation of refineries and increasing production volumes of oil products does not solve global problems. The main problem is the export of oil products to global markets. Yes, if we maintain this truce, we will completely saturate our domestic market, while refineries operate without any threat. But we could have stabilized this market anyway, and it is close to complete saturation,” he said.
Attacks from both sides
In his speech, Peskov confirmed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked an energy facility in a Russian region overnight, without specifying which one. Authorities in the Russian region of Samara reported damage to an industrial facility, but details were not provided.
The governor of the Rostov region, Yuri Slyusar, also reported that, overnight, air defense forces shot down more than 30 drones and missiles.
On the other hand, Russian troops launched an attack on Kiev, damaging two gas stations. The city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, announced that air defenses were in operation during the afternoon. He asked the population to seek shelter.
On September 2, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Russian army had been ordered to launch massive attacks against Ukraine’s energy sector. On Monday (14), Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine had decided to suspend mutual attacks on energy facilities. Moscow and Kiev have not confirmed this information.
Russia expresses willingness to resume negotiations
Russian Foreign Minister Serguei Lavrov declared this Tuesday that Moscow is ready to resume negotiations on the conflict in Ukraine and argued that the Russian side never tried to complicate this process.
According to him, Russia will be able to resume negotiations on Ukraine if the other party is willing, but he reinforced that the country will not suspend its military operations during the negotiations.
“We never refused to negotiate and all the conversations that took place were not interrupted on our initiative. Therefore, if our colleagues are willing, I believe it is perfectly possible to resume them. “We have something to talk about”, he emphasized.
Lavrov also noted that Russia has not changed its position since the start of the special military operation, but that it is ready to seek reasonable compromises.
“Fundamentally, we have not changed our objectives of ensuring our security, preventing NATO from entering our borders and ensuring the legitimate rights of Russians and Russian-speaking peoples who have lived in these lands for centuries,” the minister added.
