The Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (Mdic), Márcio Elias Rosa, stated this Thursday (2) that Brazil continues to be harmed by the actions of Bolsonarists with Donald Trump’s government, amid negotiations to avoid extra taxation on Brazilian products — the so-called tariff.
Elias Rosa reported that the Brazilian government had its fourth high-level meeting with the United States Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, and is expected to hold another next week. The tariff implementation deadline is July 15th. However, he stated that some “mistakes” caused by third parties are hindering the negotiations.
Without mentioning names, the minister pointed to the articulation of members of former president Jair Bolsonaro’s family, here in Brazil and in the United States, as the main problem.
“An example could also be the publication by someone in the United States, a former federal deputy, claiming to be the author, sponsor of the tariff. At the same time, someone here in Brazil celebrating on social media the fact that it was imposed. They are not capable of causing any uproar, but they pollute the political debate or add to the debate, which is economic and commercial, a political component that should not be present”, he stated.
The Brazilian government treats the actions of the Bolsonarists in the USA as a betrayal of the country, motivated by electoral interests. “It has no place at the negotiating table for the economy, bilateral trade, ideological issues, electoral issues, personally opportunistic issues, this has no place”, he stated.
The head of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services made reference to the former president’s children: the impeached federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro and the senator and pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic Flávio Bolsonaro.
Eduardo was even sentenced to four years and two months in prison, in a semi-open regime, for the crime of coercion during the process. The ministers of the first group of the STF understood that it was proven that he acted to interfere in the trial of the criminal case in which his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, was convicted of an attempted coup d’état, arranging for the United States government to impose sanctions on Brazilian authorities and economic measures against the country.
Despite this, Elias Rosa highlighted that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has reiterated that the negotiating table cannot be abandoned. “Whoever defends multilateralism, like Brazil, has to know how to fight against the barriers that are imposed”, he explained.
The statements were made at a press conference, at the 1st Brazilian Ecological Transformation Economic Forum, promoted by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), in Rio de Janeiro.
Tariff
The United States government announced on June 1 the conclusion of the trade investigation opened against Brazil in 2025 and proposed the application of a new 25% tariff on Brazilian products.
The investigation was conducted by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), which concluded that policies and practices adopted by Brazil were “unreasonable” and would be restricting or burdening American companies. The body informed that it will open a public consultation before the publication of the definitive report, scheduled for July 15th.
“The United States continues to maintain intensive negotiations with Brazil in search of a solution to American concerns,” said US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in a statement. According to him, despite meetings considered constructive between authorities from both countries, “substantial differences” remain on the topics investigated.
Among the report’s main targets are the Pix payment system and the Brazilian Judiciary’s actions on digital platforms. The Trump administration accuses the Central Bank of favoring Pix to the detriment of foreign electronic payment companies, especially credit card operators in the United States.
