Meeting will address environmental conservation; actor’s entity works to protect species and ecosystems
The First Lady, Janja Lula da Silva, will meet this Wednesday (September 2, 2026), at 12:30 pm, in Brasília, with the North American actor Leonardo DiCaprio. The conversation at Palácio do Planalto should address environmental preservation, biodiversity and initiatives aimed at indigenous peoples.
DiCaprio is in Brazil on a trip dedicated to conservation initiatives. In recent days, he was in Mato Grosso, where he visited chief Raoni Metuktire and indigenous communities, and in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul.
The agenda is related to the actor’s environmental performance. DiCaprio is a founding member of the board of Re:wild, an organization focused on protecting and restoring natural areas and conserving biodiversity. The entity reports that it works on nature protection initiatives and the recovery of threatened species.
The organization was created by scientists specializing in the environment in partnership with DiCaprio. The group works to protect endangered species, preserve natural areas and support indigenous and local communities involved in the conservation of these territories.
Re works in more than 80 countries and brings together more than 600 partners. Among its fronts are the protection of endangered species, the conservation of habitats and support for people involved in defending these spaces.
Re also maintains projects in Brazil. In 2023, for example, it participated in a partnership with the government of Pará and other organizations to expand actions to protect the Amazon.
Relationship with indigenous peoples
DiCaprio has been publicly active for years in defense of the protection of indigenous territories in Brazil. In May 2023, the actor published a petition from congresswoman Célia Xakriabá (Psol-MG) against the project for the time frame for the demarcation of indigenous lands. The publication asked for international support to push for the rejection of the proposal.
On that occasion, DiCaprio had also celebrated the demarcations of 6 indigenous lands signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in April of that year. The actor classified the measures as a victory for indigenous rights.
