Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has categorically ruled out the possibility of holding a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump, arguing that close dialogue is impossible as long as the US government continues to violate its commitments, impose daily sanctions and undermine trust between the two nations.
In an interview with the American network CBS, the Iranian president urged Washington to respect the agreements established in writing as an indispensable condition for the resumption of diplomatic negotiations.
Pezeshkian denounced the impact of the White House’s hostile actions on the Iranian people, recalling the assassination of senior officials and scientists in his country.
“We signed agreements. We made commitments. They must fulfill what was agreed so that we can trust that this process works. They must respect what was established in writing. And then we can sit down, talk closely and resume negotiations,” said the Iranian leader, emphasizing that, despite the attacks, Tehran maintains its claims within the framework of international law.
On the other hand, Pezeshkian questioned the effectiveness of sitting down to negotiate under the constant military and economic pressure exerted by the US government. He stressed that it is extremely difficult to trust the other side when sanctions increase daily, direct threats are made and signed commitments are not fulfilled.
The Iranian government’s position comes after a recent initiative presented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, which envisaged the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in 7 days and the resumption of negotiations on the nuclear program in exchange for specific conditions. After a meeting between the president of China, Xi Jinping, and Trump, the Asian country reaffirmed its willingness to mediate an agreement, which urged Iran to make the proposal.
Tehran requested the lifting of the naval blockade of Iranian ports, the release of frozen financial assets abroad and the easing of sanctions on oil exports.
However, Trump rejected the diplomatic proposal and, according to official sources cited by The Wall Street Journal, informed his advisors of his intention to resume bombings against the Islamic Republic after the mid-term elections, scheduled for November.
Health of Mokhtaba Khamenei
The president of Iran also stated that Ayatollah Mukhtaba Khamenei, the country’s supreme leader, does not have “specific health problems” following the injuries suffered in the joint offensive between the United States and Israel earlier this year.
“No, he has no health problems or specific ongoing difficulties,” he said during the interview with CBS News, when asked about Khamenei’s recovery.
The leader reported that he met the supreme leader on two occasions, the last of which lasted more than seven hours. And he stated that “he was healthy enough to endure hours in that situation”.
