The presidents of China, Xi Jinping, and the United States, Donald Trump, began the bilateral meeting in Washington this Thursday (24). The Chinese president was received at the White House, where he will discuss cooperation, security and artificial intelligence (AI).

In his speech, the Chinese president laid the foundations through which he hopes the China-USA relationship will be developed, citing that the two nations must avoid what he called the “Thucydides trap”, a concept that has to do with the risk of a war dispute when a hegemonic power coexists with a rising power.
“We hope that Chinese companies will be treated fairly here in the United States,” mentioned Xi Jinping. Since the Joe Biden administration, Chinese automakers have been banned from selling or manufacturing passenger vehicles in the US. Last week, Trump mentioned that he may review the ban, but the American automobile sector is putting pressure on the Republican to maintain the measure.
By Trump’s decision, Chinese humanoid robots cannot be imported into the United States, and there are restrictions on equipment linked to renewable energy.
In his speech, Xi echoed Trump’s approach that the two countries have great influence over the strategic stability of the globe, saying that both “bear a historic responsibility” in the meeting.
“Both China and the United States are leading nations in artificial intelligence. We have the ability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control and serves people’s well-being,” said the Chinese president.
This is Xi Jinping’s first state visit to the US in a decade. Unlike the occasions when Trump receives international leaders and promotes a type of informal conversation, this week’s event was designed to avoid improvisation. Both made formal statements and did not respond to questions from journalists.
