There was even mobilization on the streets of Caracas to celebrate the participation of the acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, in the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). The reason for so much celebration is the end of the diplomatic isolation to which the country has been subjected in recent years.
For the Venezuelan government, the occasion marks Venezuela’s return to the international scene and opens new windows of opportunity for the country to overcome the economic difficulties caused by sanctions.
“I ask for the support of the international community to support, in good faith, the changes that Venezuela needs, respecting my country’s right to self-determination. Venezuela wants to breathe freely, exercise its rights as a sovereign nation without any interference, a Venezuela that is admired and respected”, said the acting president at the UN, on Tuesday (23).
The last time a Venezuelan head of state participated in the United Nations General Assembly was in 2018, when President Nicolás Maduro spoke. This time, he was not even present in the speech of the current president, who avoided talking directly about the military aggression suffered on January 3rd, and referred only to what he called an “acute confrontation with the United States”.
“In 2026, Venezuela experienced two great and painful trials in its life as a nation: one derived from the strangulation of its internal political life and the heightened confrontation with the United States of America; another arising from the ferocity of nature, the double earthquake of June 24. Despite these strong blows of life, as the poet César Vallejo would say, for Venezuelans, today Venezuela is reborn”, declared Rodríguez.
For Venezuelan political scientist Martín Pulgar, although it generates some frustration in revolutionary sectors, the president plays with the weapons she has in the face of an absolutely unfavorable scenario, in which any false step could harm the very defense of Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores. The couple remains in custody in the United States.
“From the point of view of the Latin American and Venezuelan left and of Chavismo in particular, there is a feeling of deep pain, as the rescue and denunciation of an unfair act such as the kidnapping of the president, in addition to the permanent harassment against Venezuela, is a flag,” recognizes Pulgar, who, on the other hand, defends a pragmatic stance that has as its central objective to preserve negotiations between the aggressor and the attacked country.
“I’m not at those negotiating tables, but I imagine how difficult it would be to move forward in small steps that will, little by little, consolidate the easing or lifting of sanctions. The objective is not to generate noise that could impede the progress of the trial, as any statement can provoke reactions, considering that it is a media and moral judgment in which many actors influence to obtain a conviction. Any action or reaction can be harmful”, argues the political scientist.
The photo of discord
The meeting with Donald Trump, which gave rise to the photo of the president next to him, in which they both appear smiling, was one of the most talked about topics on Venezuelan social media and provoked sharp criticism of the acting president. Historical figures from Chavismo attacked Delcy Rodríguez’s government. Like TV presenter Mário Silva, former constituent deputy, who strongly criticized the meeting in New York.
“I thought it was artificial intelligence or something, but it’s total surrealism. When we see the interim president meeting with the person who bombed us and killed more than a hundred compatriots, including 32 Cubans, and making the ‘V for victory’ sign, we can’t understand it,” the presenter published on a social network.
In turn, political scientist Martín Pulgar argues that the Venezuelan government’s actions are part of a strategy based on clear objectives: ensuring the viability of the Republic and the Venezuelan nation in the face of bombardment, the preservation of participatory democracy and, finally, the maintenance of political power by revolutionary forces. And he criticizes the demands for a confrontation that would only cause more damage to the country.
“I can understand the desire to display flags. I also understand that some sectors of the left in Latin America wanted the immolation of Venezuelans and the Bolivarian Revolution, although they are willing to see others immolate themselves without doing the same in their own countries and struggles”, he points out.
“Revolutions are not made just with a book under your arm. They are made with the book and with the understanding of objective reality and subjective realities, adapting the action and the manual to each historical moment and to short, medium and long-term objectives”, continues Pulgar.
On the trip to New York, Delcy Rodríguez also met with the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, and heads of multilateral financial organizations, such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
“The fact that Venezuela can once again act with greater freedom on the international stage, without the weight of coercive measures, and can re-enter financial processes and circuits, is fundamental”, concludes Pulgar.
