The act was organized by trade unions that oppose Javier Milei’s policies; police estimate 100 thousand protesters
Students, teachers and leaders of various Argentine political parties took to the streets this Tuesday (April 23, 2024) to protest against budget cuts in the country’s public universities, proposed by the government of Argentine president, Javier Milei.
Protesters began to gather at around 3:30 pm (Brasília time), leaving Congress towards the vicinity of Casa Rosada, where union representatives, together with professors and university students, plan to read a document to present all reasons that led to the protests.
According to the local police in a statement to the Argentine newspaper Clarion, until approximately 3 pm (Brasília time), around 25,000 people had already gathered. At 5pm, the estimate was that there were at least 100,000 people participating in the university march in the City of Buenos Aires.
Former Economy Minister Sergio Massa, who ran in the presidential elections against Milei in 2023, was present at the event. “I’m not going to talk, I came to accompany my children”said the Peronist while taking photos with the protesters.
The government criticizes the protest, claiming that it is “a demonstration driven by politics” and reaffirming that the discussion on the budget of public universities is “closed”.
In early April, the University of Buenos Aires declared a budget emergency and joined the federal university march against Milei’s proposed funding cuts.
Unions and university leaders claim that the demands are based on “university budget, which repeated that of 2023, in operational costs, teacher salary arrears, scholarships and everything related to Science and Technology”.
