US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (22) that Russia and Ukraine could soon reach a peace agreement. The statement was made during his participation in the UN General Assembly in New York.
“We cooperate very closely with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, and we will necessarily reach a solution to this issue. I think this will happen sooner than many think. They have already had enough of it. […] I look at photos of the battlefield and the scenery looks horrible. 25 thousand people die every month. This is horrible,” Trump declared.
The American leader also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Before starting negotiations behind closed doors, the leaders spoke to the press.
Responding to questions from reporters, Trump said he would discuss with Zelensky the progress of negotiations with Russia, the production of Patriot interceptor missiles in Ukraine and Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries, which, as Trump reiterated, are driving up global diesel prices.
Volodymyr Zelensky, in turn, expressed hope that the war with Russia could be stopped before winter. Donald Trump has not ruled out a second meeting with Vladimir Putin to reach a Russian-Ukrainian peace agreement.
After the closed-door meeting, which lasted about 40 minutes, Zelensky spoke again to the press and stated that Ukraine is ready for a comprehensive energy truce with Russia, but that it must be bilateral.
“If we don’t attack energy facilities [um do outro]then [não atacaremos] all power installations. This is our proposal,” said Zelensky, adding that the United States would convey this position to Russia.
The Ukrainian leader also reported that “teams continue to work” to negotiate the production of Patriot anti-aircraft missiles in Ukraine. Furthermore, Zelensky declared that he is ready to meet with Vladimir Putin and that the United States can help organize the trilateral meeting.
“The most important thing the president [dos Estados Unidos] can do, including the issues I mentioned today, is to organize a trilateral meeting in which the leaders of the two countries can discuss all pressing issues,” Zelensky said.
