In his speech at the opening of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) adopted a firm stance in defending sovereignty and warning about the risks to democracy, as well as criticizing nations that wage wars and adopt unilateral stances.
Although he did not mention the President of the United States, Donald Trump, by name, the message was, in many moments of the speech, directed to the Republican, who spoke next. Lula also criticized the inertia of the United Nations Security Council in the face of global conflicts, such as the genocide in Gaza, and cited the need for reassessment and even reform.
In an interview with BdF Connectionyes Radio Brasil de Fatointernational analyst Gustavo Menon, professor at the Catholic University of Brasília (UCB) and the University of São Paulo (USP), assesses that the president’s stance was firm. The expert considered the speech “historical and forceful in defense of democracy, sovereignty, peace and revisiting the principles of multilateralism”. Menon highlighted the way Lula defended the electoral process by saying that Brazilian democracy belongs to Brazilians.
“Lula pointed out that the UN system has not been adopting what was envisaged in its founding charter to avoid the scourge of war. We are facing a world in conflagration and, in this sense, Lula condemned unilateral and protectionist initiatives. It is a situation of crossing crises. Lula was quite adamant in saying that it is necessary to rescue this spirit of the United Nations of freeing humanity from the scourge of war. The arms race of our time compromises development projects, cooperation initiatives that can accelerate the boosting the sustainable development agenda”, he assesses.
Gustavo Menon also considered the points presented by Lula regarding the achievements of the last four years to be quite correct. “He pointed to Brazil’s exit from the Hunger Map. In relation to Brazilian public policies, he highlighted the advancement of so-called green agendas and regional cooperation and integration mechanisms, which must be reactivated in the face of this scenario of paralysis not only of the UN system but also of the World Trade Organization itself, which is breathing on life support, as Lula himself said”, he highlights.
Another point highlighted by the international analyst was the moment in which Lula spoke about Latin America and the constant pressure that the region has been suffering. “He criticized initiatives to create a zone of influence in Latin America, highlighted how we should point out the economic blockade that affects the island of Cuba, how we should condemn these illegal initiatives at the international level and called for greater participation from the economies of the global south”, he states.
