Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared this Thursday (17) that new US sanctions against Russian oil and gas exports will complicate negotiations to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
“It is clear that the imposition of any additional sanctions by the US will certainly hamper efforts to find a peaceful solution in Ukraine,” he said.
According to Peskov, the Kremlin is monitoring the progress of the bill and considers that the new restrictions represent “hostile actions” on the part of Washington.
Sanctions on top of sanctions
The US House of Representatives approved a bill on so-called “sanctions from hell” against Russia this Thursday. The project provides for secondary tariffs of up to 100% on the largest buyers of Russian oil and gas, as well as sanctions against Russian authorities, businesspeople, banks, energy projects and vessels in the “parallel fleet”, used by Moscow to circumvent existing sanctions.
After several revisions, a section on Iran was added to the bill, which provides for the extension of the sanctions law against Tehran until 2031. This initiative was promoted by Donald Trump. The bill was sent to the president for signature.
If approved, the White House will have the authority to suspend or reduce tariffs mandated by law if necessary to ensure national security. Trump could also veto the bill, which would require a two-thirds vote in each house of Congress.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in turn, thanked the American congressmen, and Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha called on all of Ukraine’s partners to further tighten sanctions, impose visa bans on those involved in the war and completely block Russia’s clandestine fleet.
