Russian President Vladimir Putin made a statement to the population of his country this Wednesday (16) calling on people to participate in the parliamentary elections, which take place between September 18 and 20. According to him, the election for the State Duma (lower house of the Russian parliament) will be a “common response to all those who wish to weaken Russia”.
“Dear friends, voting will take place over three days – September 18, 19 and 20. I ask you to exercise your constitutional right and make a considered and responsible decision, so that the election results confirm the maturity and resilience of Russian society,” Putin said in a televised address.
According to the Russian president, the vote for the State Duma will be a “common response to those who want to weaken Russia, impede its development and deprive us of our sovereignty and the right to determine our own destiny.”
“Participation in the elections is our common contribution to Russia’s victory,” highlighted Vladimir Putin.
Elections to the State Duma and general elections will be held over three days, from September 18 to 20. More than 2,200 election campaigns at various levels are planned for the single voting day, with 20,700 parliamentary seats and elected positions to be filled.
According to the Russian leader, the population’s participation in voting for parliament will serve to defend sovereignty and national unity.
“Your choice will demonstrate, once again, that millions of people support our fighters, that we are a united people, united by shared values, historical memory and love for the Fatherland. That no one will be able to divide and intimidate us, or undermine our sovereignty and our socio-political system”, declared Putin.
In this context, the head of state made a point of remembering that the elections will be held in the midst of the “special military operation” (official name for the Ukrainian war in Russia), highlighting that the election will have an active participation of soldiers and officers from the conflict as candidates in the elections.
“For the first time since reunification with Russia, residents of Donbas and Novorossiya will elect deputies to the State Duma. I am confident that our soldiers and officers, who are currently carrying out difficult combat operations, will also actively participate in the vote. Their courage and loyalty to the Motherland are an example for the entire country,” Putin said.
“We know what Russia is fighting for and what is the duty of every citizen. Victory is forged by our heroes on the battlefield and is achieved by all those who work honestly for the Fatherland and understand their responsibility for its future. And participation in the next vote, which will take place during the Year of the Unity of the Peoples of Russia, is also a responsibility, a contribution to the strengthening of the country,” he added.
