The price of oil rose around 2% this Monday (31 August 2026) after the United States attacked Larak Island, in Iran. It was the first US attack on the Persian country since July. Tehran retaliated with bombings in Jordan.
The Brent futures contract reached US$89.87 per barrel at 4:33 am (Brasília time), an increase of US$1.77 or 2%, according to market data. The West Texas Intermediate, a North American reference, was at US$84.85, which represents an increase of US$1.45, or 1.74%.

In response, Iran attacked two US air bases in Jordan, Iranian media reported, based on information from the country’s Revolutionary Guard.
KHARG ISLAND
US President Donald Trump (Republican Party) stated in a publication on the Truth Social network on Sunday (30 August 2026) that the island of Kharg, Iran’s main energy hub, was being “destroyed“.
The post was accompanied by an AI-generated video and did not provide other details. Iran denied the attack and reported that oil operations remained normal.
According to Reutersthe CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company, Hamid Bovard, said this Monday (31 August) that oil operations on the island of Kharg, in Iran, have not been interrupted. He declared that the US president’s social media posts “are ridiculous and the situation in Kharg is calm”.
Negotiations to end the conflict are at an impasse as mediators work to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Before the start of the war, at the end of February 2026, 1/5 of all the world’s oil passed through the strait.
