Morgues ran out of space for flood victims and no equipment for DNA tests
Nepali authorities buried 199 unidentified bodies in a forest on Saturday (29 August 2026) and this Sunday (30 August). The measure was adopted after morgues in the region ran out of space to preserve the remains until DNA tests could be carried out.. The lack of equipment for collecting genetic material also delayed the identification of victims.
According to Reutersapproximately 100 rescue workers, police officers and other employees work on the process of documenting the dead, photographing remains, assisting family members with identification and preparing bodies for burial.
The death toll rose to 734, according to a report from the Nepalese disaster management agency this Sunday (30 August). At least 3,000 people are missing. The victims died during floods that hit the Himalayan region, destroyed villages and left cities buried under rubble and mud.
