President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) will meet the mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, next Monday (21). The meeting should take place at the residence of the Brazilian ambassador to the UN, Sérgio Danesi, during Lula’s visit to the city within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly meeting.
The invitation was made by Mamdani himself. Initially, the New York mayor had proposed that Lula participate in a meeting of progressive leaders in the city, but Itamaraty preferred that the Brazilian president receive Mamdani.
At the UN event, Lula will open the speeches, as is customary for Brazil. The bilateral with Mamdani is one of the few closed events on the PT member’s agenda, who arrives in the American city next Sunday (20). Before Mamdani, Lula must give an interview to journalist Christiane Amanpour, from CNN two United States.
Nine months into his administration, the first Muslim mayor of New York has established himself as one of the main opposition figures to the Donald Trump government, especially with regard to immigration policy. The Mamdani administration opposes the mass detention and deportation of undocumented people.
Mamdani was born in Uganda and is a naturalized American. Therefore, he cannot run for president of the United States in a future election. In addition to him, other names from American progressivism who have already met with Lula were Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders.
