Within eight months of the kidnapping and illegal imprisonment of the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and the first lady and deputy Cilia Flores, Alba Movimentos Youth launched a permanent campaign to send letters and messages of solidarity to the couple, who have remained imprisoned in New York since January 3, when the United States bombed the South American country.
The initiative was born from the experience of young people from different countries who participated in the Fidel Castro Brigade in Venezuelan territory during the month of August. According to Vittória Paz, a member of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) and member of the Alba Movimentos secretariat, the mobilization aims to break the silence surrounding the case and demonstrate the international support of the people and popular movements for the Venezuelan leaders and people.
“Within the framework of the brigade, thinking about the central role of youth in the solidarity process, we decided to bring back visibility to the date of the 3rd, which is a notable date as it represents another month since the kidnapping of the president and the first lady. In this sense, the youth will launch the campaign to send letters to Nicolás and Cilia, so that they feel the international solidarity of the people and popular organizations of Alba Movimentos towards them”, says the activist.
“We cannot let this date of the kidnapping of the president and the first lady fall into oblivion, because it is a very symbolic date. Every month we remember that it is one more month of them in prison and of the Venezuelan people without their democratically elected president and without their deputy, also democratically elected, while our continent continues at the mercy of this kidnapping”, adds Paz.
Alba Movimentos reinforces that the aggression against Venezuela represents a direct attack on the sovereignty of the entire continent. For the militants, the kidnapping of the democratically elected president seeks to weaken and control the process of the Bolivarian Revolution.
The campaign calls on national committees, social organizations and popular activism to actively participate. Messages can be sent in different formats, such as handwritten or digital letters, children’s drawings and even video recordings of texts being read.

The continental organization highlights that international solidarity will not cease and that popular movements will continue to raise their voices in defense of the freedom of the Venezuelan people and anti-imperialist unity in the region.
