In a report prepared by the State Department, released this Monday (20), the United States government accuses Cuba of maintaining a large espionage apparatus, which was able to infiltrate even the American Department of Defense.
According to the document, Cuban intelligence maintained agents within the US diplomatic corps and the Department of Defense “for decades (…) at the highest levels.”
The Cuban government reacted to the release of the document by the United States government with a statement signed by its Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, in which he accuses the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, of being the intellectual author of the report.
“The most recent fallacy of the US State Department against Cuba is part of the construction, by its boss (Rubio), of a pretext to sustain his cruel and criminal economic war, which punishes every Cuban family, and his aspiration to militarily attack Cuba, so that it desperately seeks the support of US citizens”, argued Rodríguez Parriilla.
The Cuban foreign minister also said that “this is another evidence of the macabre plan devised by this politician from South Florida, which only serves the interests of those who have always paid for it.”
Since Donald Trump’s return to the White House, the United States government has maintained that it could act at any time to promote “regime change” in Cuba. Such threats intensified after the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro last January.
‘War of attrition’
One of the examples mentioned in the report is that of Ana Montes, an analyst for the United States military intelligence services who was convicted in 2002 for having spied for Cuba between the 1980s and 1990s — she was released in 2023 after serving 20 years in prison.
Elsewhere, the report indicates that Cuba had promoted “subversive activities against the United States government” through alleged “support for revolutionary networks”.
However, the United States government also claims that “Havana never had the capacity to defeat the United States in a conventional armed conflict.”
“Havana has been fighting a long war of attrition organized around espionage, infiltration, sabotage, parallel networks and a revolutionary infrastructure designed to turn the population of the United States against the country itself,” says a passage in the report.
