The president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, spoke this Wednesday (23) at the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) and denounced the fact that the country has been a victim of “terrorism” carried out by the United States. The speech had been surrounded by expectations, precisely because it was the first from the Iranian authority after the start of US and Israeli operations against Iranian territory at the end of February.
“The President of the United States [Donald Trump] described us as terrorists. We were victims of terrorism”, said Pezeskhian, denouncing that US forces “bombed a school” and that “children died under bombs used by the US and Israel”.
In the speech, the president of Iran mentioned that the country “did not lower its head and respond, but did not attack civilian populations”. “They invaded neighboring territories and attacked our universities, our health centers, our schools, our hospitals, our infrastructure, all of this against international law”, he denounced. As Pezeshkian spoke, US representatives withdrew from the UN plenary.
The Iranian president also cited the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, saying he will not “allow some to have free access and pursue their interests in a waterway, while at the same time using that waterway to impose aggression against us, to impose insecurity on us and to prohibit access to our own waterways.”
The situation in Palestine was also the topic of Pezeshkian’s speech. According to him, the situation continues to be “an open wound in the conscience of the international community” and “a symbol of the failure of international mechanisms to prevent the suffering of civilians”. “We cannot talk about peace while ignoring Palestine. A lasting peace in the Middle East is impossible without justice for Palestine,” he explained.
In line with what Tehran has been arguing in recent months, Pezeshkian reiterated that the country has no plans to develop nuclear weapons. However, according to the authority, the country would have an “inherent” right to technology for peaceful purposes.
“We will not lower our heads or renounce our inherent right. We make this very clear: no to nuclear weapons and no to limitations on nuclear technology for peaceful purposes,” he said. According to him, Iran does not intend to use its power for hegemonic purposes. “We do not seek our security in the insecurity of others,” he said. For him, Iranian defense systems “were built in such a way that no one can think that bombing Iranian cities will go unanswered.”
Pezeshkian also took the opportunity to mention Trump’s speech at the UN yesterday, in which the Republican threatened to “annihilate Iran to hell”. According to the Iranian president, “everything that was said […] goes against the very essence” of the UN Charter. “It [Trump] You must know that the resistance of the Iranian people will only increase in the face of sanctions, increased pressure and increased intimidation,” he said.
