Vox leader, Santiago Abascal, suggests that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez follow in the footsteps of the French and Belgian governments and dissolve the country’s parliament
Santiago Abascal, president of Vox (a right-wing Spanish party), said on Sunday night (June 9, 2024) that the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, should follow in the footsteps of the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, and the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Croo, and call national elections because of the defeat in the election for the European Parliament.
In a speech after the projections of the results were announced, Abascal highlighted that his party grew in percentage and votes “for the 4th consecutive time”. Previously, Vox had already demonstrated strength in regional elections in Galicia, the Basque Country and Catalonia.
Now, the party has doubled the number of seats in the European Parliament from 3 to 6 and increased its vote share from 6% to 9.6%. “Vox’s death certificate seems to take a long time to arrive“, quipped Abascal.
Vox came in 3rd place in the election, behind the conservative PP, which won 34.2% (22 seats), and the socialist PSOE, by Sánchez, which won 30.2% (20 seats).
Abascal also celebrated the good results of allied acronyms on the continent, which, according to him, “managed to move forward with a common discourse and common convictions that are strengthening across Europe”.
“All those who believe in the sovereignty of nations, who do not want to lose the reins of their future, all those who believe in and demand secure borders, who want security on the streets, who want a prosperous countryside, a countryside with a future, a competitive national system of industry and who are ultimately unwilling to allow those who want to decide everything behind their backs to continue advancing”, these.
Finally, Abascal asked Sánchez “a reflection”, as did the governments of France and Belgium: “Dissolve the Cortes Generales and call Spaniards back to the polls”.
ELECTIONS
From Thursday (June 6) to Sunday (June 9), voters from the 27 member countries of the EU (European Union) went to the polls to vote for their representatives in the European Parliament.
The right emerged as the big winner. According to projections updated at 9pm on Sunday (June 9) by the electoral commission, the European People’s Party, led by Ursula von der Leyen, current president of the European Commission, maintained the largest group in the European Union Legislature and won 13 more seats, leaving with 189 deputies.
With the new composition, right-wing and center-right deputies will be 402 of the total 720, a dominance of 56%. There were 396 before.
