Russian and Cuban diplomats held a commemorative ceremony in Moscow, capital of Russia, to mark the centenary of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, this Thursday (13). The revolutionary’s birthday was celebrated in the Sokol district, in a square that bears his name.
Russian diplomats and public figures laid flowers at the monument to Fidel Castro. Made of bronze and three meters high, the tribute was inaugurated in 2022 by Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Díaz-Canel.
The ceremony began with a minute of silence. Russia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Ryabkov, the leader of the Communist Party of Russia, Gennady Zyuganov, the Cuban ambassador to Moscow, Enrique Horta González, and Vitaly Martynyuk, among other diplomatic figures, were present.
Commenting on the current situation facing Havana, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister declared that Moscow rejects the US sanctions policy against Cuba and will continue to strengthen strategic cooperation with the Caribbean country.
“The introduction of new restrictive measures is a manifestation of the US’s impotence, and they will not be able to break the will of the Cuban people. We categorically reject this policy and express our unshakable solidarity with our Cuban friends,” Ryabkov said.
According to the deputy minister, Russia plans to “further strengthen multifaceted bilateral strategic cooperation” with Cuba. “Russia has always been and will always be by Cuba’s side. We are ready to offer our support.”
Gennady Zyuganov, while paying his respects to Fidel Castro, strongly condemned the continued aggressive US policy against Havana.
“We must pay tribute to the courage and firmness of Commander Fidel Castro, who bluntly declared: ‘Homeland or death!’. Not only did he firmly believe in socialism and the communist idea, he deeply understood that this was Cuba’s salvation. After all, there was a predatory shark nearby, the USA, ready to devour anyone, and them first,” he stated.
Zyuganov recalled that “Fidel survived ten American presidents”, highlighting that “each of them behaved in a cynical and merciless way towards Cuba”.
“Obama tried to take steps towards normalization, but his successor, Trump, with impressive audacity and lack of ceremony, continued to strangle the economy of a country of 10 million inhabitants, without any consideration,” added the leader of the Communist Party of Russia.
