Katz’s statement insults the agreement with Lebanon and increases regional tension; Israeli army continues with bombings
Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, declared this Wednesday (12.Aug.2026) that the country’s armed forces will not withdraw from the occupied territories in Lebanon, Syria and the Gaza Strip. The information is from Al Jazeera.
In response, the United States Department of State warned that the permanent military presence in southern Lebanon violates the agreement signed in June and compromises the long-term security of the region. Despite formal pacts, the Israeli army continues bombing Lebanese territory and has resumed air strikes on Gaza, leaving victims in Khan Yunis.
“Israel will not withdraw from the territory it occupies in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza”said Katz.
The crisis is also deepening in the naval field. While President Donald Trump (Republican Party) claims that the US maintains “total control” over the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian officials responded that the route will remain blocked until their demands are met.
US military actions have already boarded or redirected dozens of commercial ships in the area, leading the International Energy Agency to estimate a reduction of 4.3 million barrels per day in global oil supply.
Given this scenario, diplomats are trying to negotiate a relief in hostilities. Pakistan sent representatives to Iran seeking rapprochement between the country and the US before the end of the term of its memorandum of understanding. In parallel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan formalized a mutual defense pact in Mecca to reorganize the regional security balance, while the Iraqi government reinforced the goal of ending the presence of foreign troops in its territory by October.
