Iran declared that it was close to reaching an agreement with Oman to define new navigation routes in the Strait of Hormuz, but also stated that it will only reopen the passage after the United States meets a list of demands, including financial compensation for the damage caused to the Persian country and the definitive suspension of attacks. On the other hand, United States President Donald Trump said he is negotiating discreetly with Iran.
However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi denied any type of direct dialogue between Washington and Tehran, and stated that this will only occur when the country stops violating the memorandum of understanding signed in June.
In an interview with BdF Connectionyes Radio Brasil de Fatojournalist Flávia Gianini, a specialist in economics and international politics, highlighted that, at this point in the conflict, after back and forth on the part of the USA, Iran is aware that what is at stake is not simply the negotiation of a trade route.
“Iran is negotiating the political price of opening Hormuz. It will sit at the negotiating table, demanding something in return. We need to understand that the United States’ request, since the beginning of the campaign, was for them to negotiate and no longer have the uranium enrichment project. From now on, Iran will no longer accept this type of debate”, he explains.
Gianini also considers how the proximity of elections in the two countries involved in the conflict with Iran, the United States and Israel, ends up impacting the progress of possible agreements, remembering that Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was the first to fail to comply with the ceasefire proposal outlined by Trump, as he refuses to stop the expansion in Lebanon. Trump, according to the journalist, tries at all costs to maintain to public opinion that he won the war, when, in fact, he has been defeated for a long time.
“Trump wants to convince that he had a military victory. Netanyahu needs to demonstrate that he is not making concessions. These are different things in political terms. Israeli public opinion does not agree with the situation in Gaza, but the main obstacle, which is the implementation of the political plan, is no longer just Hamas but has also become an allied camp of the United States. We have two presidents with two elections that will take place in less than three months fighting over this. The fight is good and they are completely disjointed in terms of internal politics”, he assesses.
