Ukraine’s attack on an Iranian ship this Tuesday (28), close to Russia, indicates an attempt to combine its conflict with the situation in the Middle East, assesses International Relations researcher Ricardo Leães, in an interview with BdF connection, and Radio Brasil de Fato.
“The United States reduced its financial support to Ukraine after the election of Donald Trump. So, Europe increased its contribution, but of course, buying weapons from the United States. But the problem is that the war against Iran is clearly demonstrating that the United States does not have the necessary missiles, ammunition, weapons. So, if there is already a lack of attack missiles, precision missiles, and interceptor missiles for the USA in the war against Iran, it is obvious that they will also be lacking to sell to Ukraine”, he analyzes.
The internationalist defines action as “a desperate act”. For Leães, Volodymyr Zelensky’s government could even become more complicated, with closer ties between Iran and Russia.
“They [Rússia e Irã] have, in practice, a maritime border, because they are connected by the Caspian Sea, that is, commercial and military vessels can circulate through this region. The biggest risk for Zelensky is that there will be a greater commitment from Iran to defend the Russians and vice versa. It’s not a good scenario. It is the scenario of a man who is desperate for solutions and who imagines that he will find some, through some magical idea, a way out of a conflict that, on the battlefield, he is losing”, he summarizes.
On the other hand, Ricardo Leães recalls that there is an evident exhaustion on the part of the USA to maintain the conflict with Iran, not only due to pressure from the oil market, but due to internal issues in the country.
“The command of the General Staff in the United States does not want the return of this war. And, more than that, let us never forget: they never wanted this war. Just before it started, the highest-ranking general in the Pentagon leaked to the press the US Army’s view that they did not want this war. For the situation to reach this point, it is really because they were very worried about this situation”, he highlights.
