President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) intends to take advantage of his visit to Beijing, at the end of March, to advance relations between Brazil and China in at least four areas: climate agenda, investments, infrastructure and global governance. According to former chancellor Celso Amorim, current special secretary of the Presidency for International Affairs, the two governments are going to announce partnerships, especially on the environmental issue.
“China is still perhaps the biggest emitter of CO2, but at the same time it has developed very important programs because it knows that this is physically and politically unsustainable. I think the climate will play an important role in these talks with China,” Amorim told Valor. Economic.
The expectation is for important announcements, which deepen Brazil’s ties with the Asian country, our largest trading partner. “I still don’t know if a fund or a target program will be created. But there will certainly be several climate impact programs, (in areas like) renewable energy and satellite monitoring”, confirms the special secretary.
According to Amorim, Lula should also talk about global governance with President Xi Jinping, who was re-elected to the post on March 10th. In the view of the Brazilian government, China “is an absolutely fundamental country (for this governance), as well as the United States”. Another possible topic under debate is the nomination of former President Dilma Rousseff (PT) to head the New Development Bank (NDB), the Bank of BRICS, in Shanghai.
The Brazilian delegation to China will be increased. As Poder360 found out, two senators and six federal deputies are already confirmed in the delegation, in addition to businessmen.
