President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) emphatically criticized the United States’ stance towards Venezuela. In an interview given this Monday (21) to journalist Christiane Amanpour, from CNN Internationalthe head of the Brazilian Executive stated that the sovereignty of the neighboring country has come to an end due to the interference promoted by the US government.
“What the United States did to Venezuela is very serious,” said the president. “The United States conveys the idea that it is governing Venezuela. This is the message they convey in every document and agreement that we read. It seems that the United States is the big boss in Venezuela. The country’s sovereignty is over. This is not good. It is not good for the United States, it is not good for Venezuela and it is also not good for democracy”, added Lula.
The statement was made in New York, where Lula is participating in the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly. The president defended that new presidential elections be called in the South American country. The last election, in 2024, was not recognized by the Brazilian government, in an unprecedented position in diplomacy.
“We should build a partnership with Venezuela. I said the other day that if I were Delcy [Rodríguez]the president, would call national elections so that the people could choose who will be the next president of the country”, he declared.
For Lula, the conduct of diplomatic relations by Donald Trump’s government violates the principles of international coexistence.
“The way the United States is treating Delcy makes it seem like the United States is her boss. This is explicit in every newspaper report we see, and Trump likes to declare that he controls Venezuela’s oil for the United States, that they pay a little to Venezuela and that he has everything under control. This is not the best way to conduct international relations or international policy for the United States,” criticized the president.
Ignoring the procedure adopted by the United States in the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, during a military operation against the country that resulted in the loss of more than a hundred people, and the absence of evidence against the Venezuelan president, Lua said that Maduro “must be tried”, but suggested that this should not be done by another country.
“If Maduro made a mistake, he has to be judged. He has to be judged and we have to investigate. There has to be an investigation. A country cannot accuse,” said Lula in the interview.
