President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was on Thursday (15), at the Montevideo Lesgislative Palace (Urugauai), to accompany the funeral of former President Jose “Pepe” Mujica. “Go in peace, Pepe. Hasta Sigrere,” wrote the president in honor of his friend.

Lula said he was moved by the love of the people of Uruguay to his friend. “I say goodbye to the most extraordinary person I’ve ever met,” he says.

The president also highlighted the Brazilian entourage present in the funeral. “They accompany me in this farewell, in addition to Janja, Minister Márcio Macêdo (General Secretariat of the Presidency), the president of BNDES, Aloízio Mercadante, and parliamentarians Humberto Costa (PT-PE), Jandira Feghali (PCdoB-RJ) and Guilherme Boulos (PSOL-SP),” he said.

Lula gave condolences to the widow of Mujica, Lucía Topolansky, and highlighted the former president’s trajectory and his political impact on Latin America.

“What is gratifying for us humans is that a person like Pepe Mujica does not die. He is a superior human being, a person who has few in the world with similarity, with political competence, with the ability to speak and, above all, his youth,” he said.

Lula also remembered the strong connection built over the years with Mujica, and reflected on the recent losses of great world leaders, such as Pope Francis.

“I leave here with a lot of sadness because we had two irreparable losses in these last 15 days. […] I hope the two together, where they are in heaven, will be able to bless so that humanity is more fraternal, more generous and that politics can be done more worthy, ”he said.

“I was in Uruguay today, along with the president and members of the government and parliament, to the farewell of one of the world’s greatest popular leaders: José ‘Pepe’ Mujica. We pay our honors to this great man, who made love a revolutionary tool and the struggle for social justice a permanent and encouragement for everyone we believe in a better world. Uruguayan people.

Mujica’s body should be cremated, and the ashes will be buried during a simple ceremony in the farm where he lived.

Before he died, the former president said he wanted to be buried next to his dog Manuela, who died in 2018.
