René Gonzalez Barrios received the Brazil in fact in his office, inside the Fidel Castro Ruz Center, an institution he directs, in Havana, the capital of Cuba. It is in this building that Fidel Castro’s vast collection of books is housed, as well as some of the personal belongings of the commander of the Cuban Revolution.
The interview takes place at a time when the country is going through the biggest economic crisis in its history, a direct result of the blockade imposed by the US on Cubans for more than six decades. Barrios criticized the method adopted by the Americans to attack the island.
“No country that has undertaken the project of developing socialism has done so under the conditions of hostility in which Cuba did. The blockade is an official genocide of the United States government against Cuba,” he explained.
Bairros, who met Fidel for the first time when he was an employee at the Cuban embassy in Mexico, argues that Fidel Castro’s story be told based on another Cuban hero, José Martí, who fought against Spanish colonial rule in Cuba.
“Fidel was born in 1926, on August 13, but Fidel drank from the entire history of Cuban independence and, from there, shaped his political, ethical and cultural conceptions. It was from this source that Fidel Castro fed, and so we have a Fidel who is a Martian, a Cespedist, and who collects all this flow of ideas, this entire flow of feelings, culture, political culture, social culture that the heroes who founded the country dreamed of,” says Bairros.
