The publisher Expressão Popular launches next Tuesday (22nd), at 6pm, the book Marco Rubio: an uncontrollable mythomaniacby Cuban investigative journalist Hedelberto López Blanch. The work presents an x-ray of the US senator’s personal and political trajectory, examining his statements and alliances. The first launch will be held at Livraria Leonardo da Vinci, in the center of Rio and the second at Museu da Maré, Thursday (24), at 3pm.
Translator of the Brazilian edition and responsible for presenting the book at its launch, Carmen Diniz, highlights that the book questions the narrative that Rubio uses to build his political identity. The senator often states that his parents fled Cuba due to the Castro dictatorship, but the work documents that the family arrived in Florida in 1956, still under the government of Fulgêncio Batista. “This is one of the first lies he tells everyone, as if it were the truth”, says the coordinator of the Carioca Committee for Solidarity with Cuba.
The publication also covers the contradictory relationship between Rubio and Donald Trump. Diniz recalls that, during the 2016 Republican primaries, Rubio attacked Trump with personal insults, warning that he could “destroy the United States”. Currently, however, the senator acts as a close ally of the former president, a position that the translator describes as that of an “accomplice of an imperial, dictatorial government, which now occupies the White House”.

Regarding the content of López Blanch’s investigation, Carmen Diniz highlights that the book brings together evidence and documents about the senator’s actions on topics such as drug trafficking and relations with power groups in Florida. Among the information already public on the subject is that Rubio’s brother-in-law, Orlando Cicilia, was arrested in 1987 for participating in a cocaine trafficking operation in Miami. In the early 2000s, Rubio acted as guarantor for his brother-in-law in a real estate transaction.
For Diniz, the work is essential for understanding United States interference in Latin American politics, especially in election years. She argues that, given Donald Trump’s attempts to transform the region into Washington’s “backyard”, by wanting to return to the Monroe Doctrine, reading becomes a tool for defending Brazilian sovereignty.
