Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for Moscow’s stance on the war in the Middle East and the sanctions imposed on the Persian country. The two leaders met this Tuesday (1st), on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
“We appreciate and recognize your positions at all stages, both during the period of fighting and acts of aggression and under normal circumstances, when the United States imposed sanctions on us, both at the United Nations and in international forums,” Pezeshkian said. The meeting between the two is the first since the beginning of the US and Israeli offensive against Iranian territory, which began in February.
Putin, in turn, offered solidarity with the Iranian people in the fight against the USA and Israel. “During this difficult period, we are trying to provide the necessary assistance. We have already talked about this with you. We are providing the necessary supplies,” the Russian president said.
Furthermore, according to a statement released by the Kremlin, the meeting between the two leaders aimed to analyze “the current state of bilateral relations between Iran and Russia”, and the two parties “discussed ways to strengthen and expand cooperation in various areas”.
Before the meeting, Pezeshkian took advantage of his presence at the event in Bishkek to highlight that Iran would be willing to comply with the terms of the preliminary peace agreement signed with the US in June, but that, to do so, Washington must do the same.
“I explicitly declare that if the United States returns to its protocol commitments, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately adopt reciprocal measures. Unlike the US, Iran has a brilliant record of complying with its international treaties,” the Iranian president said.
According to information from the Iranian agency IRNAPezeshkian used the speech to propose the creation of a financial institution to deepen financial and banking cooperation between SCO countries, the formalization of an export and investment insurance union, as well as the formation of an energy consortium.
In the joint statement from this year’s SCO summit, called the “Bishkek Declaration,” the group condemned the US and Israeli war against Iran, as well as Western sanctions against some of its members. In the document, the OCX states that the attacks “violate the principles and norms of international law and the UN Charter and create serious risks to international peace, security and stability”.
The members highlighted “their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran and advocate a resolution to the conflict exclusively through political and diplomatic means.” Furthermore, the countries stressed that “the only possible way to guarantee peace and stability in the Middle East is a comprehensive and fair solution to the Palestinian issue.”
