After meeting with Qatar, Iran signals reopening of the Strait of Hormuz subject to compliance with conditions

Iran decided to draw up a list of conditions to restore normal traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. According to information from Al Jazeerareleased this Friday (28), the initiative was encouraged in dialogues held with Qatar this week.

One of the important figures in advancing the negotiations was Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Prime Minister and Chancellor of Qatar, who met with the main names in Iranian diplomacy. According to the publication, Al Thani proposed a return to the state before the war started by the United States and Israel on February 28. On Network X, the authority stated that it highlighted to the Iranian diplomatic corps “the importance of respecting freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law”.

Abbas Araqchi, the Iranian foreign minister, classified the talks as “creative”, demanding that the United States suspend military and economic pressure on Tehran. “Putting diplomacy back on track is not impossible. It depends on the US understanding a simple fact: pressure does not work”, he said on the X network, this Friday (28).

There are still no details about the exact points placed by the Persian country. Last Thursday (27), Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, recalled, in an interview with the broadcaster Al Manarthat the country reached an agreement with Oman to create a provisional navigation corridor in Hormuz, with sections that will pass through both Oman and Iran.

Despite diplomatic moves, Washington remains reticent to the idea of ​​sitting at the table. Also in a post on social media, the Iranian Foreign Minister condemned the new US sanctions announced last Monday (24), calling them “state terrorism”. According to him, countries that adhered to the measures would be practicing “complicity in the imposition of the illegal will of a State”.

So far, Iran has maintained that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is conditional on the end of the US blockades of Iranian ports. Another important point is the demand for payment of compensation for this year’s war, in addition to the removal of sanctions on resources in the Persian country.
