Four years ago, the former president of Argentina, Cristina Kirchner, suffered an assassination attempt promoted by Brazilian Fernando Sabag Montiel. At the time, Montiel pointed a gun inches from the former president’s head and pulled the trigger, but the gun did not fire.
Last Tuesday (1), the date that marked the anniversary, hundreds of Cristina’s supporters gathered in front of the building where the former president is under house arrest, in the Constitución neighborhood, in Buenos Aires.
In an act that recalled the attack, Cristina appeared on the apartment’s balcony and waved to the crowd. On the street, the former president’s son, Máximo Kirchner, gave a speech in which he recalled that “democracy does not allow the elimination of the opponent”. Kirchner demanded an Argentine court, asking for a more in-depth investigation into the case. “Those who planned and financed the attack are now beyond the reach of justice”, recalled Máximo. In 2025, Fernando Montiel was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Just over a year before the Argentine presidential election, this week’s event was marked by a political nature. In the speech, Kirchner argued that the former president would not be prohibited from running for office. “We are the ones who want to vote for her,” he said.
Cristina’s son also referred to the appeal presented by the defense to the UN Human Rights Committee, which calls for the former president’s political rehabilitation. In 2025, the Argentine Supreme Court banned Cristina from running for public office, in a decision with lifetime effect.
Kirchner also criticized the Javier Milei government’s economic policy. “Argentineans were deceived. They were told that their income would be dollarized. The Casa Rosada [sede do governo da Argentina] it must once again belong to all Argentines”, he stated.
In his speech, the former president’s son also indicated that the opposition to the Milei government must align its speech against the measures of the far-right administration. “It’s not about them [trabalhadores] will receive in dollars. What was dollarized was the public service tariff. We need to talk better about some of our problems and explain better to people what happens with this type of government”, he recalled.
Who also spoke about the four years since the attack against CFK was the governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, one of the names considered to lead the opposition against Milei in next year’s presidential election.
“It is really serious that four years after the assassination attempt, the investigation has not produced any results regarding the perpetrators. Today, Cristina remains unjustly detained and the assassination attempt she suffered remains unpunished”, criticized the Peronist governor.
At the time of the attack, Cristina received expressions of solidarity from some of the most prominent political figures in the region. That September 2022, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), then a candidate in the election that would take place the following month, said that the former president of Argentina was “the victim of a criminal fascist who does not know how to respect differences and diversity”.
