Pope Francis expressed his condemnation of Israel’s excessive use of force when attacking Lebanon. The comments were made by the pontiff when asked, on Sunday (29), about Israeli air strikes that killed the leader of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, among other citizens, including two Brazilian teenagers, Ali Kamal Abdallah, aged 15, and Mirna Raef Nasser, 16 years old.
According to Francisco, war is immoral, however, even in it, there must be some morality, and the defense must never be disproportionate to avoid a proposal for domination – as Israel has been doing.
“The defense must always be proportional to the attack. When there is something disproportionate, you see a tendency towards domination that goes beyond morality”, said the Pope.

“Even in war, there is a morality to safeguard […] War is immoral. But the rules of war give it some morality,” he added.
The declaration is in line with what President Lula preached in his speech at the UN. As the Brazilian leader put it, “Israel transformed the right of defense into the right of revenge” and that the situation prevents an agreement for the release of hostages and postpones the ceasefire.
Numerous times since the beginning of the war, the leader of the Catholic church has expressed concern about the progress of the conflict and asked for a truce. The recent statements were made on a flight back to the Vatican, in Rome, from Belgium, where he met with members of the Catholic community.
