Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba submitted his resignation letter on Wednesday (4) amid a major cabinet reshuffle in President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government. Ukraine is at a crucial moment in its 30-month war with Russia.
After Zelensky, Kuleba, 43, was the country’s best-known official abroad, meeting with leaders around the world and lobbying for military and political support in fluent English.
“I ask you to accept my resignation,” Kuleba wrote in a letter sent to parliament and posted on social media by assembly speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk.
On Tuesday (3), five other ministers, including those of Justice, Industry and Environment, also submitted their resignations. The minister responsible for arms production, Oleksandr Kamyshin, resigned before taking up another position in Defense.
In addition to Kuleba and Hamyshin, Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna and Justice Minister Denys Malisuka, Environment Minister Ruslan Strilets and Reintegration Minister Iryna Vereshchuk have also left their posts. They join Vitali Koval, the head of Ukraine’s State Property Fund, who also recently resigned. The vacancies in these ministries leave about a third of the cabinet vacant.
Zelensky said changes in the government were necessary to achieve the results Ukraine demanded.
“Autumn will be extremely important for Ukraine. And our state institutions must be configured so that Ukraine achieves all the results we need, for all of us,” the Ukrainian president said on Tuesday.
The changes come at a critical moment in the war, as Russian forces advance on the eastern front in areas such as Donetsk and Kharkiv. Moscow has stepped up drone and missile strikes in recent weeks.
