Image of Jewish teenager had “Gaza” written on its base; organizations against anti-Semitism criticize the act
The statue in honor of Anne Frank in Merwedeplein, north of Amsterdam (capital of the Netherlands), had the word “Gaza” graffiti at its base on Tuesday (9.Jul.2024).
Frank was a Jewish teenager who lived in Merwedeplein before fleeing the Holocaust. She became known for her diary written while hiding from the Nazis, becoming an international symbol of the fight against anti-Semitism.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the European Jewish Congress criticized vandalism, saying that graffiti “It is disrespectful to the memory of Anne Frank and the 6 million Jews murdered during the Holocaust”.
The American Jewish Committee also condemned the act in a publication on the social network. He stated that the practice was an example of anti-Semitism that “represents hate, not activism”.
Amsterdam VVD (People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, right-wing) councilor Stijn Nijssen condemned the act.
“It is truly shameful that anyone would think of drawing attention to the Palestinian cause by tarnishing an image of Anne Frank, an international symbol of the Holocaust.”he declared.
The case is being investigated by Dutch authorities. No one has been arrested as of the publication of this report.
