Poll says far-right unlikely to gain majority in France

An electoral survey released this Thursday (4) in France places the far-right National Rally (RN) party ahead in voting intentions for the second round of the legislative elections, held next Sunday (7), but far from an absolute majority. The survey by the French Institute of Public Opinion (IFOP, in its French acronym) revealed that the RN should obtain between 210 and 240 seats in the National Assembly.

To form an absolute majority, the party or coalition needs to reach the number of 281 deputies.

Right after the National Rally, the New Popular Front appears with the second largest projection, with 170 to 200 seats. This is the coalition of left-wing parties composed of Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s France Insoumise (LFI), the Socialist Party (PS), Oliver Faure’s Ecologist Party (EÉLV) and the French Communist Party (PCF).

President Emmanuel Macron’s coalition, named Juntos!, according to IFOP, should be the third force in the second round of the legislative elections, totaling between 95 and 125 deputies in the National Assembly.

Juntos’ voting intentions represent a sharp drop in the number of deputies in the presidential coalition, which in 2022, the last legislative elections, had reached 245 seats. In 2017, Macron had an even larger number of parliamentarians, with 350 deputies and the presidential majority.

Finally, the Republicans appear as the fourth force in the National Assembly, with the expectation of reaching between 25 and 45 seats.

National Meeting: 210 and 240 deputies
