Edmundo González, the main opposition in the election, did not agree with the document signed by the other candidates
The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, publicly committed this Thursday (June 20, 2024) to respect the results of the presidential elections scheduled for July 28. It is a response to the concerns of the opposition and international observers regarding the integrity of the electoral process.
The commitment, which includes 9 points, was signed by Maduro and 7 other presidential candidates, under the coordination of the CNE (National Electoral Council), the country’s highest electoral authority.
Maduro highlighted his desire to put an end to “sabotage and conspiracies” against Venezuela, stating: “Whatever the election judge says, amen”.
Edmundo González, the main opposition candidate and who leads polls, did not sign the agreement, criticizing it as a “unilateral imposition” and highlighting the lack of invitation to the document presentation ceremony.
González, absent from the event, reiterated that the recognition of the electoral results was already included in a previous agreement, violated by the government with the cancellation of the invitation to EU (European Union) observers and the increased pressure on opposition leaders.
The electoral campaign in Venezuela begins on July 4th.
