President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s candidate won a landslide victory, with 58.3% to 60.7% of the votes
Claudia Sheinbaum, 61 years old, graduated in Physics, with a master’s degree and doctorate in energy engineering, won the presidential election in Mexico, for the Sigamos Haciendo Historia coalition (center-left), and will be the first woman to govern the country, according to the official projection of the preliminary vote count released by INE (National Electoral Institute) this Monday (June 3, 2024).
According to the projection, with 77% of the ballots counted, Sheinbaum obtained between 58.3% and 60.7% of the votes. Next, opponent Xóchitl Gálvez won between 26.6% and 28.6%. The counting model adopted by INE estimates the election result with a margin of error of 1.5% downward and 1.5% upward.
Sheinbaum is the country’s first female president. In a speech, she said she had reached the Presidency with all Mexican women. “I don’t get here alone. We all arrived. With our heroines who gave us our homeland, our ancestors, our daughters and our granddaughters. We were able to show that Mexico can hold democratic elections“, he spoke.
He stated that his government will prioritize the poorest population, work against corruption and in favor of security, democracy, freedom, equality and justice.

López Obrador celebrated the achievement in a speech. “Today is a day of glory because the people of Mexico freely and democratically decided that Claudia Sheinbaum would become the first female president in the 200 years of independent life of our Republic. Congratulations to all of us who have the joy of living in these stellar times of pride and transformation”, said the president.

Who is Sheinbaum
Born on June 24, 1962 in Mexico City, into a family of Jewish scientists, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, 61, is the candidate supported by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The country does not allow re-election.
Sheinbaum is part of Morena (National Regeneration Movement), the same party as López Obrador. The party leads the Sigamos Haciendo Historia coalition, also formed by the PT (Partido del Trabajo) and the PVEM (Partido Verde Ecologista de México).
She built a distinguished academic career before entering politics. She graduated in physics and obtained a master’s and doctorate in energy engineering from Unam (National Autonomous University of Mexico). His academic work, focused on environmental issues, earned him recognition and the opportunity to participate in sustainability and climate change projects.
Sheinbaum entered politics in 2000. She served as Secretary of the Environment for Mexico City, from 2000 to 2006, under the administration of López Obrador. In 2015, she was elected delegate of Tlalpan, one of Mexico City’s territorial demarcations, where she promoted security and sustainable urban development.
In 2018, she was elected the first female head of government in Mexico City – a position equivalent to that of governor in Brazil – by Morena. During her tenure, Sheinbaum focused on urban mobility, sustainability, public safety and gender equality, facing challenges such as the covid-19 pandemic.
This year, Sheinbaum launched his candidacy for President of Mexico proposing to continue López Obrador’s policies. In security, he defends the reinforcement of the National Guard, created by the Mexican president to contain violence and crime in the country.
She also highlights the importance of keeping the call “republican austerity”López Obrador’s policy that aims to reduce public spending, combat corruption and promote government efficiency.
The measure includes cuts in government operating expenses, such as spending on official vehicles, travel, telephony and other administrative services. Sheinbaum also defends the increase in social spending and public investments to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality in the country.
