North American newspaper fired Sally Buzbee, who had been there since 2021; Matt Murray, from the “Wall Street Journal”, will lead the newsroom until November
The North American newspaper The Washington Post announced on Sunday night (June 2, 2024) that Sally Buzbee has stepped down as the newspaper’s executive editor. Buzbee has held the position since 2021. Under her management, the newspaper won 2 Pullitzer Prizes for Best National Reporting.
“Sally is an incredible leader and an extremely talented media executive who will be greatly missed.” said William Lewis, CEO and publisher of The Washington Post.
The chosen replacement was Matt Murray. He will remain in office until the US presidential elections in November. Afterwards, the newspaper will be led by Robert Winnett, deputy editor of the Telegraph Media Group, responsible for the newspapers Daily Telegraph e Sunday Telegraph.
Murray was executive editor of The Wall Street Journal since 2018. He worked at the newspaper for 28 years. “I am deeply honored to join such a celebrated news outlet, with its long and rich history of memorable and impactful journalism” disse Murray.
The change of direction is part of the expansion plan of the Washington Post to create a new newsroom focused on modern journalism, according to the statement. The objective is to become more attractive to the population that does not like traditional journalism. According to the newspaper, this new newsroom will focus on video narratives with the help of AI (Artificial Intelligence).
As shown by the Poder360 in February, the average circulation of the top 10 US print newspapers fell 13% in 2023 compared to the previous year. This is the same rate of decline as Washington Postwhich went from an average circulation of 140 thousand copies in 2022 to 128 thousand in 2023.
