US intelligence cites actions by the Islamic State that suggest possible escalation of violence in Pride month
The FBI, the United States federal intelligence service, and the Department of Homeland Security reported on Friday (May 10, 2024) that public events held during the month of June, which celebrates International LGBTQIA+ Pride Day, could be targets of foreign terrorist organizations.
“Foreign terrorist organizations may attempt to commit or incite violence against the LGBTQIA+ community”, wrote the FBI in a statement released on Friday (May 10, 2024). Read the full note, in English (PDF – 160 kB).
Traditionally, the month has a series of events celebrating LGBTQIA+ Pride, celebrated on the 28th, in several cities around the world.
The statement mentions 3 events that indicate the possibility of terrorist activities. Are they:
- an attack on the Pulse nightclub, in Orlando (Florida), turns 8 years old in June this year. At the time, 49 people were killed and 53 were injured. The Islamic State launched an offensive;
- In February 2023, the Islamic State released an anti-LGBTQIA+ article. The text suggests that followers of the terrorist group conduct attacks on unidentified soft targets;
- In June 2023, 3 alleged supporters of the terrorist group were arrested for trying to attack an LGBTQIA+ Pride parade in Vienna, the capital of Austria, with knives.
