The Islamic State organization assumed responsibility this Thursday (4) for the two explosions recorded the day before in Iran, which killed at least 84 people, according to the most recent official information. Previously, Iranian state media reported 103 deaths, but the number was corrected.
According to the CNN World, the Islamic State, also known by the acronym ISIS, released a statement more than 24 hours after the attacks claiming responsibility. The explosions were recorded on Wednesday (3), in the Iranian city of Kerman, where a pilgrimage was taking place in honor of General Qassem Soleimani, killed in January 2020 in a United States military operation.
According to the Iranian state news agency Irna, in addition to the 84 confirmed deaths, 284 people were injured. The press vehicle also reported that security camera images showed that the first explosion was caused by a suicide bomber. How the second bomb exploded has not yet been confirmed.
Still on Wednesday, hours after the attacks, the president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, published a harsh note in which he called the action a “terrorist crime”, and said that the country’s authorities will take “the necessary measures” to alleviate the pain of the victims’ families and treat those who were injured.
“The president also announces in his message that the perpetrators and criminals who were involved in this terrorist attack will be identified as soon as possible and will be punished for their actions”, continued the note signed by Raisi.
Qassem Soleimani, who was being honored in a large event at the time of the attacks, was an extremely important political figure in Iran, and was ranked “number two” in the country’s political structure, behind only Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, when he was killed. . He was hit by a US drone strike in Iraq on January 3, 2020.
