Rescuers and engineering teams have already cleared 2.5 km of the G216 national highway, hit by a landslide in Gyirong, in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.
The section is one of the access routes to the port of Gyirong. Another 1.8 km still need to be released to complete the work, reported the Chinese broadcaster CGTN not Saturday (Aug 29, 2026).
The road closure occurred after the collapse of a glacier on Wednesday (Aug 26). The episode caused a flood of rocks, ice, mud and other debris through rivers in the Himalayan mountains.
The avalanche hit communities in the border region between Nepal and Tibet. As of this Sunday (30 August), at least 788 people had died in Nepalese territory and 16 in China.
Images released by Chinese media show machines working to remove the debris that covered the road.

GYIRONG PORT
Gyirong Port is a strategic trade corridor between China and South Asia. The area received investments in logistics infrastructure in the last decade. According to Xinhua, Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang arrived in the region on Thursday afternoon (Aug 27) to monitor the response work to the disaster, treated by Xi Jinping’s government as a priority.
