A Ukrainian drone attack hit the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk, in the Tatarstan region, this Monday (10), leaving at least 13 dead and 39 injured. Local authorities reported that “industrial and civilian targets” were hit in the massive attack on the city.
Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belyaev said a child was among the dead. He added that the drones hit “not only industrial facilities but also residential areas.”
The press service of the head of the Tatarstan region reported that 75 people sought medical attention after the attack in Nizhnekamsk and 21 were hospitalized. National mourning was declared as a result of the attack. The death toll from a single attack on Russian territory is one of the deadliest since the start of the war.
It was later also reported that citizens of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan were among the dead. “According to the latest information, seven of those killed were Uzbek citizens,” the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan reported, cited by the agency Tass.
While the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the attack hit an oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, and the country’s authorities did not comment on reports of civilian casualties, the Investigative Committee of Russia reinforces that the Armed Forces of Ukraine used drone attacks “against residential areas and industrial facilities”. A criminal case was opened based on the terrorism article.
According to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry, air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 456 Ukrainian drones over 16 Russian regions (including Tatarstan).
