The President of Iraq, Nizar Amedi, condemned the offensive carried out by the United States and Saudi Arabia this Wednesday (29) against the military installations of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in the country, which led to the death of at least 20 combatants and left 32 injured.
In a statement, Amedi classified the attacks as “unacceptable” and a “flagrant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty, targeting its official security institutions in violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.”
The Iraqi president reiterated that the country’s territory should not be used as “a launch pad or arena for attacks on neighboring countries or to settle regional and international scores.” He also urged “all parties to respect Iraq’s sovereignty and refrain from any actions that could compromise its security and stability.”
Former Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani also spoke, condemning “in the strongest terms the Saudi and American attack. He classified the aggression as a “flagrant violation of Iraqi sovereignty” and “a clear violation of international law and the UN Charter”, as well as a transgression against “the principle of Islamic brotherhood”.
The former Iraqi prime minister recalled that the attack occurred after the Iraqi government formed committees to investigate allegations that drones had been launched from the country’s territory against Saudi Arabian oil installations. According to al-Sudani, the opening of the investigation “reflected the Iraqi state’s commitment to addressing issues through legal and institutional structures, not through military escalation.”
He further stated that Iraq “maintains all its legitimate rights guaranteed by international law”, stressing that any violation of the country’s security and stability “is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated”.
Request for peace
Iraqi cleric Muqtada al-Sadr asked the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) and militias allied with Tehran not to use Iraqi territory to carry out attacks, warning of the risk of the country being drawn into a new war. “Rebel militias must not give our brothers in the Gulf states a pretext to attack our holy land,” declared al-Sadr, in a post on Platform X.
He called on the parties not to “engage in the schemes of the Zionist-American enemy to incite brothers to fight and kill each other,” condemning “violations of Iraqi sovereignty.” He also criticized the militias’ attempts to “drag Iraq into a senseless war.”
To the government, Al-Sadr advised it to impose its state authority against “terrorist sleeper cells, both inside and outside the country”, which could exploit sectarian tensions to destabilize the country. “Iraq and its people need peace,” he said, adding that the country has had “one war too many which, unfortunately, has drained Iraq of all its resources and dignity,” he said.
He also appealed to neighboring countries for peace and reconciliation, defending a region “free from foreign bases, normalization and the abominable colonial hegemony”.
