Photo of Flávio Bolsonaro’s betrayal with Donald Trump

Former President Donald Trump’s post on his social network, Truth Social, in which he fondled senator and presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), became the pivot that unmasked the real interests of the Brazilian extreme right. The virtual cuddle took place on Tuesday (2), exactly the same day that the United States government’s proposal to overtax Brazilian products by up to 25% gained publicity, highlighting the contradiction of the Bolsonaro delegation.

Trump’s publication occurred exactly one week after the meeting held with the Brazilian parliamentarian in the Oval Office of the White House, in Washington, which took place on Tuesday (26). In the caption that accompanied the official images of the private meeting, Trump wrote on the official account: “It was great to have Flávio Bolsonaro in the Oval Office of the White House — an intelligent young man who really loves his country, Brazil!” In the photos, in addition to Flávio, federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro and far-right commentator Paulo Figueiredo appear.

Pretexts for taxing Brazil

Washington’s tariff offensive against Brazil is based on the fallacious conclusions of an investigation conducted under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 and concluded before the agreed deadline. The document issued by Ambassador Jamieson Greer, head of the United States Trade Representation (USTR), formalized on Monday (1st), adopts a protectionist tone by pointing out that Brazilian regulatory and commercial practices are “unreasonable and burden or restrict US trade”.

The points of friction include digital commerce and electronic payment services, under the allegation that fines against American social networks and alleged favoritism towards Pix harm US companies. The USTR report also cites failures in the fight against corruption, protection of pharmaceutical patents, breach of agreements in the ethanol market and deforestation in the Amazon. If the differences are not resolved by July 15, 2026, the 25% tariff will come into force on several national products, except specific items such as meat, coffee and aeronautical components.

Sellers of the Fatherland

The submission of the Bolsonaro delegation in Washington generated a strong national reaction. In Catalão (GO), on Tuesday (2), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called parliamentarians “salesmen of the country” for trying to negotiate internal matters abroad.

Trump’s post acted as the trigger for Palácio do Planalto and social movements to denounce the submissive stance and harmful to national sovereignty adopted by opposition parliamentarians on US soil. On social media, the reaction was immediate and the term TariFlávio was one of the most used.

The American attack on Pix generated outrage even in the financial sector. Febraban defended technology as a public infrastructure that encourages competition and inclusion, rejecting Washington’s protectionism. Analysts warn that 21% of Brazilian exports to the USA are at risk from the sanctions, mainly in agriculture, a sector that is home to Flávio Bolsonaro’s main supporters.

Because of the negative reaction, the Bolsonaro pre-candidate claimed, without a diplomatic mandate, that he discussed the issue with Donald Trump, JD Vance and Marco Rubio, even after making it public that the visit to Trump was to commit another act of treason: asking the foreign nation to interfere in Brazilian Public Security by classifying national organized crime factions as terrorists.

The letter in Flávio implores the Donald Trump government not to impose new tariffs, had the opposite effect and resulted in the announcement of new taxation on Brazilian products, of 12.5%, under the pretext that Brazil fails to prohibit and monitor the import of goods produced with “forced labor”.
