In a joint statement issued on Monday (21), the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of 25 Western Allied countries required the immediate end of the war in Gaza.

The document, published by the United Kingdom government, was signed by nations such as France, Germany, Canada, Japan and Australia, as well as the European Union, and represents the harshest diplomatic manifestation against Israel since the beginning of the military offensive in October 2023.

The signatories claim that the suffering of Palestinian civilians “hit new levels” and that the war “should end now.” “More bloodshed is no purpose,” says the statement, which claims to support “an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire.”

The statement was signed by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Ireland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Litonia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, In addition to the European Union Commissioner for Equality, Preparation and Management of Crisis.

The statement marks an unprecedented escalation of international pressure, including governments that traditionally offer unconditional support to Tel Aviv.

Among the countries that subscribe to the document are four of the five members of the Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance – United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand – considered strategic partners of the United States and Israel.

The alliance is a security group in security and confidential information exchange. The fifth member is the United States.

The change of posture reflects the growing diplomatic isolation of the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, whose policy in Gaza is now openly criticized by allied chancelers.

The adoption of blunt language, such as “inhuman murders” and “deliberate denial of humanitarian aid,” suggests that Western countries no longer consider justify Israeli actions on the grounds of fighting Hamas.

The main target of the complaint of 25 countries is Israel’s Humanitarian Aid Distribution Model in the Gaza Strip. According to the statement, this model is “dangerous, feeds instability and deprives the Gazenses of their human dignity.”

The document points out that more than 800 Palestinian civilians were killed as they tried to get food and water – many of them in the vicinity of Distribution Centers of the Humanitarian Foundation Gaza (GHF), an entity supported by Israel and the United States.

GHF started to operate parallel and, to a large extent, substituting the UN coordinated aid system.

Signatory countries, however, warn that the imposition of this model violates the principles of international humanitarian law and compromises the neutrality of help. “The refusal of the Israeli government to provide essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable,” says the text.

Since the end of May, when Israel announced the partial relaxation of the blockade, the UN and the Ministry of Health of Gaza have recorded at least 875 Palestinian deaths in queues and food distribution sites – numbers that opened the severity of the crisis.

In addition to criticism of help management, the statement condemns “the gradual and insufficient supply of assistance” and “the inhuman civilians of civilians, including children, who only sought to meet basic needs.”

Countries require Israel to immediately suspend all restrictions on help entry and allow UN agencies and humanitarian organizations to operate safely and effectively in Palestinian territory.

Offensive advances on Deir al-Balah while hunger and deaths intensify

On the same day the joint statement was released, Israeli tanks advanced on Southern and East neighborhoods of Deir Al-Balah, in the center of the Gaza Strip.

The city in the center of the Gaza Strip had not yet suffered attacks on a large scale and, therefore, acts as a center of humanitarian efforts in the devastated Palestinian territory.

The Israeli army says he believes that the hosts captured by Hamas in October 2023 are there.

The new raid further raises the number of victims of the war, which already exceeds 59,000 Palestinians killed, according to the Ministry of Health of Gaza. Most victims are women and children.

The Israeli siege led to a situation of total collapse of health services, with scenes of hungry children, without access to drinking water and ruined shelters.

The offensive started on October 7, 2023 has already turned the Gaza Strip into a almost total devastation scenario. According to reports from humanitarian organizations, whole neighborhoods were reduced to rubble, while food and medicine scarcity reaches levels considered critical by the United Nations.

Mortality in help distribution contexts illustrates the inability of the current model to ensure safety to the civilian population.

The humanitarian crisis caused by the siege and the bombing has been aggravated by measures such as the Israeli proposal to move Palestinians to a so -called “humanitarian city”, condemned as illegal by signatory countries.

“Proposals to remove the Palestinian population for a ‘humanitarian city’ are completely unacceptable,” says the document. “Permanent forced displacement is a violation of international humanitarian law.”

The statement reaffirms that permanent forced displacement is a flagrant violation of humanitarian international law and reiterates the opposition of countries to any demographic or territorial change imposed on the Palestinian population.

Appeal by political solution and alerts new international measures

Signatory countries claim to be “prepared to adopt new measures” in support of an immediate ceasefire and a lasting political path to peace between Israelis and Palestinians. The document reiterates support for mediation efforts conducted by Qatar, Egypt and the United States, and maintains that the only viable exit is a political solution based on respecting international law and the end of hostilities.

In the British Parliament, Chancellor David Lammy echoed the content of the joint statement and said that “there is no possible military solution” for the crisis. According to him, the next ceasefire “must be the last,” in a clear sign that the United Kingdom has conditioned its support to Israel to a real commitment to the end of war and respect for civil life.

In addition to the political manifestation, the British government has announced a new pound package (about $ 81 million) in Humanitarian aid to Gaza. The measure reinforces the understanding that Western diplomatic pressure begins to become concrete actions, with the potential to reposition the international debate about war and demand responsibilities from the Israeli government.

“We are prepared to adopt new measures to support an immediate ceasefire and a political path to security and peace for Israelis, Palestinians and the whole region,” the statement concludes.
