The 26th meeting of the Foro de São Paulo ended last Sunday (02/07), after four days in Brasília, in which representatives of different parties and social movements in Latin America and the Caribbean attended seminars debating the deepening of unity, integration and regional sovereignty.
The final declaration of this issue, published this Tuesday (04/07), pointed to the need to advance in the fight against the extreme right, noting the need to overcome differences to “build” a broad unity against the international “conservative offensive”.
That’s because, according to the document, the region has a “second chance” to win a majority of progressive governments in the region. “We will overcome differences, build the broadest unity in the diversity of parties, social and popular movements, and progressive and left-wing intelligentsia within each organization, country and continent”, says the document.
But not only that, Cuba was declared “Universal Patrimony of Dignity” by the Foro de São Paulo for its “historic” resistance to the “unjust and criminal blockade of the imperial power of the United States”. they are examples “to all nations and popular parties of the world”.
Opera Mundi, Jackson Ribeiro, who is studying the São Paulo Forum at the Federal University of the ABC (UFABC), stated that Cuba being exalted in the final resolution is part of the “main objective of the entity”, which is the fight for regional integration.
This edition of the Forum honored Marco Aurélio Garcia, one of the founders and main promoters of the São Paulo Forum, whom Ribeiro called one of the “architects of the Latin American and Caribbean union”. As a result, the highlight in the final declaration of solidarity with the countries of Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba was positive for the UFABC doctoral student: “it is understood that, in order to advance in this integration process, it is necessary to combat the interference of the United States in the region”.
Ribeiro highlighted that the São Paulo Forum claims the “historic responsibility of being the spearhead” of this process of regional rapprochement, as it manages to be a “privileged space for dialogue and accumulation of forces for the challenges that will come, in social, electoral, cultural and economic”.
“Throughout the 26th meeting, the need to resume practical actions aimed at strengthening the entity’s main objective: greater integration in the region was emphasized. -Americans and Caribbeans (Celac) and resuming the process of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) give a practical perspective to this integrative initiative”, Ribeiro told Opera Mundi.
New achievements of the progressive field
The declaration of the 26th meeting of the São Paulo Forum also highlighted the recent victories of the progressive field in Latin America, such as those of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in Brazil, and Gustavo Petro, in Colombia.
For Ribeiro, due to Lula’s victory, the Forum held the 2023 edition in Brasília, as a “symbolism” of this advance towards regional sovereignty.
“Brazil, due to its economic and demographic weight, is certainly a fundamental driver of Latin American and Caribbean integration. With the return of the Workers’ Party (PT) to the Brazilian executive branch, the Forum of São Paulo gains new impetus to resume the integrative process interrupted by some victories of the region’s conversational sectors in recent years”, said Opera Mundi.
