Wishing to “make the external borders impermeable” as a “union between Poland and Italy”, the Polish Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawieck, met this Wednesday (05/07) with his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, in Warsaw.
The anti-immigration statement was made by Morawiecki, stating that “combating illegal immigration is the best recipe” between the similarities of Rome and Warsaw.
At a joint press conference, Meloni, who has always aligned himself with Morawiecki and other far-right leaders in the European Union, said he would never complain “about those who defend national interests”. The statement comes after Italy supported the migration plan proposed by the EU, which has been criticized by Poland.
“I am amazed at how Morawiecki shows strength in defending Poland’s interest, but there is no division because we work to stop illegal migration, not to manage it,” said Meloni.
Last week, Hungary and Poland opposed a reform in the European Union’s migration rules, which provides for the participation of all Member States in the reception system for the thousands of asylum seekers arriving on the coasts of Italy and Greece.
The agreement, which was unanimously approved, something unusual in the EU, provides that countries that refuse to receive asylum seekers arriving in the south of the bloc will pay 20,000 euros per person to a fund managed by Brussels.
At the time, the Polish government declared that it wants to “own its own state” and its “sovereignty cannot be attacked by supranational institutions, such as the European Commission”.
The premier also promised to call a referendum to decide who “is in charge” on the issue of immigration, the bloc or a “sovereign country”.
