The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) arrested a 29-year-old man this Wednesday (18), suspected of murdering Russian general Igor Kirillov and his assistant, Ilya Polikarpov, killed in an explosion in Moscow on Tuesday morning ( 17).

The suspect’s arrest was confirmed by the Russian government’s Investigative Committee. The Kremlin accuses Ukraine of having ordered the crime and classifies the action of Volodymyr Zelensky’s government as terrorist.

The Russian government’s Investigative Committee said the arrested suspect was a man born in Uzbekistan. He, whose name was not disclosed, confirmed to investigators that he was recruited by the Ukrainian intelligence services.

According to the Russian committee, a bomb was placed on a scooter parked near the entrance of a residential property. The suspect confessed to planting the bomb.

The device contained around 300g of TNT and was activated remotely, Russian state agency Tass reported. The explosion, which occurred as Kirillov was leaving the building, damaged the entrance and several windows of the apartments.

The suspect confessed that he had been recruited by Ukrainian special services, which promised a payment of US$100,000 (around R$614,000 at current exchange rates) and a trip to the European Union, Tass reported.

The man was arrested in the village of Chernoye in Moscow’s Balashikha district, the Ria news agency said, citing Interior Ministry spokeswoman Irina Volk.

A video of the suspect’s confession was published by the Baza news channel, which is known to have sources in Russian law enforcement circles. It was not clear under what conditions he admitted guilt for what happened.

Dressed in a winter coat, the man says he went to Moscow on orders from Ukraine’s intelligence services, bought an electric scooter and was given an improvised explosive device to carry out the attack months later.
