The interference of the Donald Trump government in the Brazilian electoral process, which was previously seen as a possibility by international analysts, has materialized into concrete evidence, with emphasis on the content of the American president’s speech at the United Nations and the agreement with 14 Latin American countries that form the Shield of the Americas to classify criminal organizations as terrorists, including the PCC and the CV.
A group of US Democratic lawmakers sent a letter to the country’s State Department expressing concern about possible interference in the October elections.
In an interview with BdF Connectionyes Radio Brasil de FatoGilberto Maringoni, professor of International Relations at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC), highlights that Trump’s interference in Brazil began precisely last year, when the tariff was imposed, later revoked by the US Supreme Court. At the time, the US president randomly threatened the whole world, but even so, it was a harbinger of what is being accomplished now.
“At one point, Brazil, together with China, was taxed at 50%. They were the two countries with the highest tariffs. It was clear pressure on the Lula government”, he assesses, considering that, even so, Lula always sought diplomatic negotiation mechanisms.
Maringoni considers Trump’s maneuver using the Shield of the Americas to be serious, especially because the concept of nacorterrorism, as the professor points out, is something new and created by the extreme right. This process is dangerous because it sets a precedent for military actions in Latin America at a time of Brazil’s isolation.
“What it implies is that, in addition to being a group that acts outside the law, you have a political project to change the government or regime and are capable of committing violent acts against the civilian population. This denomination of terrorist attack opens up a situation in which Trump will make use of mechanisms that are dormant in the drawer, which is the Inter-American Reciprocal Aid Treaty, which was signed during the Cold War. It is a kind of Latin American NATO”, he warns.
In the document from Democratic parliamentarians, there is express mention of Trump’s meeting with candidate Flávio Bolsonaro (PL). The signatory group asks that the White House respect and recognize the results of the elections in Brazil.
Maringoni highlights the seriousness of the scenario and recalls the process of delegitimization of the elections in Venezuela, which began in 2024, and which culminates in the January 3 attack with the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro. “When you do not recognize a government, the door opens to breaking agreements, be they cooperation, commercial, military agreements, of all types. Because the incumbent force is considered to be illegitimate”, he warns.
